FC Sunderland Wiki
The Sunderland and District Teachers AFC was founded in 1879 by James Allan, a schoolmaster, to replace Stoke City in The Football League in the 1890-91 season. They were known as the "Team of All Talents" in the late 19th century.
FC Sunderland's badge includes a ship and a football in front of the red and white stripes which are the team's colors. They've played in 7 stadiums during their history and currently play on grounds at Stadium of Light in Monkwearmouth. The stadium, which has a Davy lamp monument outside to remind people of the Monkwearmouth Colliery pit that it was built upon, holds 49,000 people. Plans for future construction would allow 66,000 spectators to watch FC Sunderland's matches. Their main rivals are Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. In 2008-09 FC Sunderland claimed their first home victory over Newcastle in 28 years.
The team's nicknames have been The Black Cats, The Light Brigade, The Miners and the Sols but in 1997 the fans voted to make The Black Cats their official nickname.
Steve Bruce is their present manager, having served since 2009. The team has won First Division 6 times, Second Division 5 times, 2 FA Cups, 1 Charity Shield and were runner-up for the Football League War Cup in 1942.
