Villarreal CF Wiki
Villarreal was founded in 1923 and played in regional leagues until the Spanish Civil War put a temporary stop to football. They stayed in regional leagues after the war; they were occasionally in Tercera Division until the early 70s when they played in the Segunda Division for 2 seasons then again dropped back into Tercera Division. In the late 80s the team managed to join the Segunda Division B and in the 90s landed solidly in the Segunda Division. Villareal plays their home games in the 25,000 seat El Madrigal stadium.
The team earned their nickname, "Yellow Submarine", for three reasons. First, their home colors are bright yellow shirt, shorts and socks. Second, the team tends to keep a low profile in the media until they suddenly achieve a surprise victory on one of the "big ships" and blow them out of the water, so to speak. Third, the team has a tendency to move between divisions. Their mascot is Groguet ("little yellow"), a figure with a submarine head. Villarreal's rivals are Castellon, another team from the province of Castellon, and their clashes are called the Valencian Local Derby.
Villarreal is managed by Juan Carlos Garrido Fernandez, one of the few managers that is not a former player. He has been managing since he was 23 years old.
