RCD Espanyol was formed in 1900 and has the distinction of being the first Spanish football club formed exclusively by Spanish fans. They were charmed from the beginning, winning the Campionat de Catalunya in 1903 and from there played in the Copa del Rey. They are now the 6th most successful football club in Spain. They play at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat stadium, which has the capacity to seat 40,500 fans. It is a new stadium whose construction was finished in 2009.

Barcelona is RCD Espanyol's rival and they have overshadowed the team for years. However, Espanyol continues to rank high in La Liga. Espanyol has won 4 Copa del Rey, twice been runners-up to the UEFA Cup in the 7 times they participated and they won the Segunda Division once.

Manager Bartolome "Tintin" Marquez was a midfielder for the team in the early 1980s. He started his managing career in 1997, winning the Catalonia Cup against FC Barcelona. He has also coached Espanyol's youth teams.

RCD Espanyol's colors are blue and white out of respect for the colors that appear on the shield of Catalan Admiral Roger de Lluria, who protected Catalonia's interests in the Middle Ages. The team's nicknames are Pooheads and Parakeets.
