Genoa Wiki

Genoa is an Italian football club based in Genoa, Liguria. It was formed in 1893 as and athletics and cricket club by Englishmen and only British citizens were eligible to join. The football club was established in 1897, making it the oldest club of its kind still operating in Italy. The team won their first title in 1898 and is the 4th most successful in Italy. One of their nicknames is Vecchio Belordo, or "old fool" and they are also referred to as Il Grifone, or "the griffin". Their coat of arms consists of two griffins on either side of a St. George's Cross.

Genoa's home matches have been played at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, a 36,536 seat stadium, since 1911. They have shared it with their rivals, Sampdoria, since 1946. Since the team was originally British so were its colors, the blue and white of the English National Football Team. Their shirts are now red and blue halves and their shorts and socks are blue. They also have a rivalry with AC Milan; there is bad blood between the two teams after the 1995 stabbing death of Vincenzo Spagnolo, a Genoa supporter, by an AC Milan hooligan outside the stadium. A riot ensued and the game was abandoned at halftime.

Genoa is managed by Alberto Malesani, who loves coaching so much that he interrupted his honeymoon to watch coaching sessions by Johan Cruijff at Becelona FC.
