Italian football team Cagliari (Cagliari Calcio) was founded in 1920 and now plays in Italian Serie A. Their team colors are red and blue, as their nickname, Rossoblu (red-blues) attests. Home games are played at Stadio Sant'Elia, which seats 23,486 spectators.
Cagliari has had a lot of ups and downs during its history. Champions of Serie C in the 1951-52 season, they then went to Serie B and fell to Serie C in the early 1960s. However, like the proverbial yo-yo, they catapulted to Serie A in 1964. They then hit a gradual decline and were relegated in 1976, returning to Serie A in 1979. Relegated again in 1983, they were in Serie C1 by 1987.
Cagliari stayed in Serie C1 for two seasons but in 1988 their newly appointed coach, Claudio Ranieri, led them to Serie B and then to Serie A in 1990.
After 1997, Cagliari sank to Serie B but after some more ups and downs they ended the 2008-2009 season in 9th place. They have been Serie A and Serie B champions once each and Serie C champions 3 times. The team was semi-finalists in the UEFA Cup in the 1993-94 season.
Cagliari is currently managed by Roberto Donadoni, a former attacking midfielder known for his technique and pace. He played two seasons for the NY/NJ MetroStars.
